Kish United Way celebrating 80 years

By DAILY CHRONICLE
For nearly a year, a group of volunteers has been planning, creating and implementing ways to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Kishwaukee United Way. On June 26, the celebration will take place at Northern Illinois University's Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center.

The community is invited to attend. Guests are encouraged to show their support by dressing in 1980s attire and are invited to enjoy food, music, movies and games from the outrageous decade of bright colors, flipped collars and the origins of MTV. The evening will include an authentic Pac-Man game, photo booth, Rubik's Cube contest and dancing. In the library, cake and coffee will be served while Ferris Bueller travels around Chicago or Ducky falls for his best friend, who is pretty in pink. Guests also will be encouraged to enter 'best moonwalk' and 'best outfit' contests.

In 1929, a group of concerned citizens interested in helping to support the delivery of human services formed the DeKalb Community Chest. The DeKalb Community Chest evolved into the DeKalb United Way. DeKalb United Way was in place until 2004, when a merger of the DeKalb United Way and the Sycamore United Fund was facilitated, resulting in what is now Kishwaukee United Way.

The DeKalb Community Chest was comprised of all volunteers. The DeKalb United Way employed a part-time bookkeeper for a number of years, and, in 1997, the first full-time executive director, Dawn Littlefield, was hired. A volunteer board of 20 members oversees the organization's activities.

The Kishwaukee United Way allocates funds to 30 community partners, supporting numerous programs. From its inception, the United Way has supported mentoring, child care, transportation, counseling and other advocacy programs as well as prevention and recreation activities. United Way was initially structured as an organization that could cut down on costs, save time and serve the community efficiently while supporting human services. The KUW's work has expanded beyond the core of fundraising and gift solicitation to advocacy for human service issues on a local and state level, and the promotion of volunteerism and civic engagement.

UW Meets Membership Criteria

Over and above the annual requirements, Kishwaukee United Way will complete a mandatory organizational self-assessment in August if this year, as part of this process...Read More.
